What is a laboratory scientist?

At the forefront of cutting-edge research and development, laboratory scientists perform both established and novel laboratory procedures using state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation. Meanwhile, they ensure that all scientific tests are performed with uniformity, consistency, reliability, reproducibility, quality and integrity. They always put safety and ethics first.

What will I learn?

This programme is designed to enable existing team members or new recruits to develop the knowledge skills, and behaviours needed to fulfil their vital role.

You’ll develop a deep understanding of the scientific principles, theories and techniques relevant to your speciality. You’ll be taught how to independently design experiments, interpret data, and present results using statistical analysis and clear communication skills. They’ll learn how to follow ethical and regulatory guidelines, promote safe working practices and lead continuous performance improvement.

Through our learning programme you’ll learn to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with both scientific and non-scientific audiences. You’ll learn good time management and the ability to respond positively to change. Our programmes instil strong values of reliability, integrity and a commitment to continuous learning.

What next?

Once you’ve qualified, you’ll be eligible to join the Register of Science Technicians (RSciTech) through an appropriate industry body.

Successful apprentices can often find themselves fast-tracked into senior technician and management roles. Or they might go on to a higher level apprenticeship.

Course modules

Module 1
Cell Biology and Biochemistry

An introduction to the fundamentals of molecular and cellular biology, including key concepts in cell biology, metabolism and biochemistry, as well as exploration of core concepts fundamental to all biological systems, including cell structure, properties and functions. A building block for further study throughout the rest of your programme.

Module 2
Human Anatomy and Physiology

An exploration of fundamental concepts within human physiology and anatomy, including anatomical and physiological structures and functions. The module will cover levels of organisation at chemical, cellular and tissue level; support and movement; integration, regulation and control; and fluids and transport in the body.

Module 3
Mathematics and Data Analysis

A module that provides a toolkit of mathematical and statistical skills that can be applied across various scientific disciplines. You will develop skills in algebra, trigonometry, statistics, data visualisation and data analysis, as well as applying critical thinking to assess the validity and reliability of scientific data.

Module 4
Lab Practice

A module focused on the principles of laboratory practice, which will include online instructional videos and self-paced learning to support development of problem-solving, scientific inquiry, collaboration, safe working practices and report writing.

Module 5
Reflective Project

An on-going project that runs for the entirety of Level 4, this module uses reflective practice models to guide you in setting quality professional development goals, monitoring continuous improvement and upholding high standards of professional conduct and behaviours in the workplace.

Module 1
Project Management

An introduction to the principles and practices of project management, this module will equip you with the tools and techniques required to plan, schedule, allocate resources and communicate effectively in collaborative projects. You will develop a project plan that will be executed in your Workplace Project module.

Module 2
Human Pathology

An introduction to the fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of human disease, including genetic and environmental factors. You’ll be equipped with an in-depth knowledge of specific pathological conditions, as well as different vectors and causes.

Module 3
Genes and Genetic Technology

An exploration of the basic principles of genetics, including gene structure, function, and inheritance patterns. You’ll develop understanding of epigenetics, genome organisation and genetic diversity, as well as reflect on the ethical, legal and social implications of genetic research and technologies.

Module 4
Environmental Science (optional)

An optional module that explores the intersection of environmental science with biosciences, including internal and external environmental regulations and legislations; climate evolution; sustainable development within biosciences and environmental monitoring. You’ll develop your own proposal for sustainable practices in the workplace.

Module 5
Infection and Immunity (optional)

An optional module that explores the different types of pathogens that can cause infectious diseases, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and the mechanisms they use to evade or subvert the immune system. You will examine the host’s immune response to these infections, as well as investigating the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

Module 6
Lab Practice for Biosciences

A module focused on practical laboratory skills in the field of Biosciences, which will include online instructional videos and laboratory simulations to support development of experiment design, data interpretation and analysis and application of laboratory techniques and procedures to solve real-world problems.

Module 7
Workplace Project

An on-going project that runs for the entirety of Level 5, this module uses reflective practice models to guide you in planning and monitoring laboratory-based investigations to contribute to improvements in the workplace. You will propose, execute and manage your own work-based project and present your findings at the end of the module.

Module 1
Microbiology

An exploration of the fundamental principles and concepts of microbiology, including the study of microorganisms, their classification, structure, and function. You’ll develop an understanding of the role of microorganisms in various processes, as well as gain knowledge of the methods used to study them. In particular, you’ll consider the applications of microbiology in industry, investigating fields such as biotechnology, food science, environmental science and medicine.

Module 2
Biosciences Horizons

An examination of the latest and emerging areas of research in the field of bioscience, including advances in biotechnology, genetics and biomedicine. You’ll consider the political, social and regulatory implications of cutting-edge research, evaluating real-world examples such as Covid-19, gene editing and animal testing.

Module 3
