Tell us about you and your job role:
I am a Laboratory Technician apprentice. I wake up early enough to see the rest of the world wake up. My daily role is to cast cubes, cylinders and prisms out of a spectrum of materials. For example, cement, concrete and grout. I then test the strength of these shapes. I travel around to different sites and get to mingle with a big variety of people.
What inspired you to start the apprenticeship?
My ex-girlfriend helped me to see that I could do better with my career.
What are your aspirations for the future?
The skills I have learnt will come in useful for whatever career I choose to pursue. Having the backing of Balfour Beatty will steer me right.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I never knew it was a job! As I had never heard of it, it was really exciting trying something new.
What advice would you give to other people thinking about starting an apprenticeship?
You’ll get support every step of the way, more than you’d expect! Do it and take the plunge – you may love it and you may not, but at least you’ll know! Apprenticeships are great because you are paid to learn.
