BYK x Tiro: Investing in the Next Generation of Chemists

The Challenge: Building a Skilled, Future-Ready Workforce

Published 4th July 2025

As a leader in chemical innovation, BYK understands that the future of the industry depends on highly skilled scientists. But hiring ready-made experts isn’t always possible—so instead, BYK set out to develop their own.

In February 2024, they took the leap, recruiting their first-ever chemistry degree apprentice with Tiro. The results? So impressive that they welcomed a second apprentice just a year later.

BYK wasn’t just looking for employees—they were investing in the future of chemistry.

The Solution: A Strong Partnership with Tiro

Tiro worked closely with BYK to identify, recruit, and develop two high-potential Chemistry Degree apprentices, ensuring they gained both technical skills and real-world experience.

Apprentice #1 (Feb 2024) – A degree-level recruit, now an integral part of the team Apprentice #2 (Feb 2025) – Following in their footsteps, reinforcing BYK’s commitment to training future talent

Through hands-on learning, expert mentoring, and structured development, these apprentices are already making an impact—not just learning, but actively contributing to BYK’s success.

The Impact: Adding Value from Day One

– Apprentice quickly adapted to the role, demonstrating enthusiasm and a strong work ethic – Now fully trained in multiple QC testing procedures, delivering key results to production – Independently solving problems and supporting the wider QC team – Ensuring work is completed efficiently and to a high standard, strengthening operations

What BYK Says

“Our lab apprentice has adapted to her role quickly. She is keen to learn new skills, and her willingness to learn has meant work is completed in a timely manner and to a good standard.

She is now fully trained in many of our daily QC testing procedures and is able to work well on her own and as part of the QC team, provide results to production, and problem-solve when issues arise.”

— Debbie Lawton, IMS Manager, BYK

Looking Ahead: A Long-Term Commitment to Apprenticeships

With one apprentice thriving and a second now on board, BYK has proven that apprenticeships are more than just training—they’re an investment in the future of science.
