Happiness in schools ‘starts with the head teacher’

Andy Cope, who’s aiming to become the UK’s first ‘Doctor of Happiness’, says a happy head teacher can lead to a happier wider community.

Positive and upbeat head teachers create a “ripple effect” leading to positive and happy communities, a wellbeing expert has said.

Andy Cope, author and trainer, said that “modern head teachers” have to be “absolutely engaged” with wellbeing and happiness, but said that the tendency to “put off happiness until the weekend” has a detrimental effect on mood.

Speaking at the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) annual conference, the soon-to-be “Dr of happiness” gave head teachers tips on inspiring their staff and pupils and imbuing a positive atmosphere throughout the school.
