An incredible opportunity has become available for a Science Manufacturing Technician Apprentice to join our team at Platinum Group Metal Services, which is one of four business within Efficient Natural Resources sector, part of Johnson Matthey plc. With manufacturing operations in the UK, US and China, and sales to key markets across Europe, US, China and India, the business unit manages, distributes, refines and recycles precious metals and fabricates products using precious metals and related materials. The business unit also manufactures platinum group metals, minor metal compounds, organometallics and fine metal powders for high technology applications, as well as providing a range of management services for platinum group metals.
What it’s like working in this role

As a Science Manufacturing Technician apprentice, you’ll become an integral part of a well-established team. This is a dynamic and diverse role, where you’ll be working alongside the Production Lead and you’ll be responsible for operating and maintaining a chemical process plant in a safe and proper manner, to produce outputs that meet all customer and business unit specifications. This role will see you monitoring the process to enable the fulfilment of the production plan, while communicating any changes and risks to the plan to the Production Lead and production management.

In addition, you’ll be comfortable engaging with both, hands-on and admin-based tasks, as this role has elements of office-based work too.

In this role you'll receive:

• Starting salary of £15,000 per annum (raising to £18,000 after 1 year and £21,000 after 2 years)
• 38 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Qualifications

It’s about enthusiasm, not school results. In our experience the most successful apprentices are those who have drive to find out more about the sector, can be up front about what they do and don’t already know, are considerate, self-reflective, and impatient to learn the job role!

Skills and characteristics

To be successful in this role, you’ll have strong communication skills, both verbal and written, strong numerical skills and attention to detail. You’ll be sensible and mature with an explicit safety awareness. You’ll collaborate efficiently with the rest of the team and you’ll be a natural problem-solver.

So how does the apprenticeship work?

At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.

Over 21 months, you’ll devote 20% of your time to working towards a Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro, who’ll make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your apprenticeship. In the workplace, you’ll have a mentor who will support and guide you in your work-based learning.

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a University or College environment.
